Amidst the commotions during the late 60's, social and political mayhem developed.
Countless incidents were worst enough to make a mark in the annals of Philippine History. Not to mention the pervert leadership
of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, this period saw the breakdown of traditional beliefs and long-held values in favor of newer and
more progressive ideas. In almost every aspect of Filipino life and culture, "change" seemed to be the rightful order of the
day. The Fraternity System in the University of the Philippines was immune from these external developments. As extraordinary
times, this called for and breeds extraordinary men. Nineteen sixty-eight saw the wielding together of six Arts and Sciences
student leaders with a vision of introducing change and reforms in the feudal and decadent nature of the existing Fraternity
System - violent hazing and bloody fraternity fights known as "rumbles". Subsequently, these grievances resulted the creation
of the UP Triskelions' Grand Fraternity, (which was later changed into Tau Gamma Phi), on October 4 of the same year. The
founders of this fraternity were one in the plot of re-establishing the true essence of "brotherhood", which was at that time,
lost and mis-concepted by most. For this very reason, the Tau Gamma Phi conceptualized the so-called "Anti-Fraternity System".
With the rampant number of deaths among neophytes, it was the time that the belief and trust in the Fraternity System diminished.
Hence, the Tau Gamma Phi was known as a "Protest Fraternity", which is pro-better life. Ss such, it has uncompromisingly committed
itself in the Fraternity Life and to the two-fold task of providing the leadership in the quest for a Fraternity System that
is devoid of Fraternity violence, as well as in the propagation of the TRISKELION as a Way of Life. Through the years, the
Tau Gamma Phi has never strayed from it's goals. Although the cause of which it has chosen to champion has proven to be very
difficult and sometimes, seemingly hopeless. However, the fraternity has survived and even increased a thousand times in strength
and in number, knowing fully well that peace is a product of strength and not of weakness, where other fraternities with the
same noble intentions failed, which made them succumb into non-existence because of adopting a passive resistance to fraternity
violence. Nevertheless, the Tau Gamma Phi has chosen not to follow the same path, lest, it will suffer the same fate. Furthermore,
as a manifestation of its sincerity towards the achievement of such goal, the fraternity has taken an active role in organizing
inter-fraternity alliance with various schools and universities all over the country. This is due to the hope that such alliance
will provide a conducing atmosphere, where fraternities can slowly grow and mature together in a fellowship of mutual trust
and respect in each other's philosophies and ideals. "De gustibus non desputandum est - of likes and dislikes there should
be no disputing, live and let live", this is one of the guiding principles of the Triskelions. The Tau Gamma Phi's bylaws,
better known to its members as their Tenets and Codes of Conduct, are based on spiritual, moral and ethical values. The fraternity
lives by a balance of three dynamic forces: Strength, Free Will and Brotherhood, as shown on the fraternity seal Fortis, Voluntas,
Fraternitas. Nowadays, the Tau Gamma Phi is already one of the biggest, most cohesive, and most dynamic fraternities in the
Philippines. Being 35 years old still, it already boasts over half a million active and alumni members of every colleges and
universities around the country alone. But, the fraternity has already expatriate chapter in the regions of the United States
of America, Europe, and other Asian countries. The Tau Gamma Phi fraternity continues to grow memberships with pledges coming
from various college degrees - medical/science, law, engineering, business/finance and arts/music. In addition, to foster
its objective of changing the elitist orientation of the Fraternity System, the fraternity had decided to open its door to
out-of-school youth so that they, who were not privileged of education, may also share in the fruits and the glory of the
Tau Gamma Phi. To encapsulate the basic facts, the TAU GAMMA PHI (for males) was founded on October 4, 1968, while the TAU
GAMMA SIGMA (for females) was on January 17, 1969 (original foundation, rather than 1971). Diffused, the two groups are considered
the Triskelion Grand Fraternity / Sorority that was founded at the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City...
The rest will be again, part of its "history". |
